30 AUG 2010

Chapter 1's football extravaganza kicked off on Friday 6 August at Warwick University, with team players and supporters arriving from 15 different Chapter 1 projects throughout the country.

The teams were eager to display their football talents, as well as compete in Chapter 1's very own take on the World Cup.

Event organiser, and chaplain, Martin Batstone said,"We are trying to achieve the goal of bringing large groups of people together in a positive and productive way, but the football is just the vessel, and it's not just about the football".

The first day saw a rigorous but enjoyable training routine that left nothing but excitement and healthy competitiveness coursing through the veins of the players, who were all more than eager to get started.

The service users, staff & volunteers taking part came from all walks of life, there was a diverse range of ages and ability which contributed to the overall ethos of the event.

Avid footballer and volunteer worker Ryan, 37, who is currently living in Chapter 1's Jatis project in Torquay said, "This is all absolutely amazing, to see these people getting involved in something like this is great".

Following the support from the Jatis project, Ryan has successfully completed a counselling course and is all set to pave the way for other young disadvantaged people to gain independence within our communities.
